Un projet à terminer...

Mon ami Guyt, Maître de l'univers à ses heures ( http://guyt54.blogspot.com/ ) , et moi, assistant maître de l'univers aux heures de Guyt; avons travaillé sur un amplificateur de puissance l'année dernière. Un ampli à transistors bipolaire fonctionnant en classe AB.

C'est un ampli de configuration standard à trois étages. Ce concept fut développé en 1956 par Mr. Lin chez RCA. Cette "topologie" est connu sous le nom de "Lin three- stage topology". Aujourd'hui encore, c'est le standard dans la construction des amplificateurs de puissance à transistors. Il paraît qu'environ 95% des amplificateurs construits, le sont de cette façon...

Au cours des prochaines semaines, je devrais remettre le projet en route pour le terminer aussitôt que les projets en cours seront finis...

Sopht Amp 1/8W

Today I finished building another amp. This one is a 125 - 250 mWatts (1/8W - 1/4W)

I needed an amp that wasn't too loud but still got some distorsion. Something that wouldn't disturb all the familly... This amp does the job fine. The tone may not be the best but it's not bad either.

Une rencontre spaciale ...

Ces jours-ci, il y a possibilitÃ© d'observer quelque chose de particulier dans le ciel du soir. La planÃ¨te Saturne passe prÃ¨s d'un amas d'Ã©toiles. L'amas de la Ruche ou M44 situÃ© dans la constellation du Cancer.

Pour trouver les Ã©toiles et les constellations qui suivent, Ã©loignez-vous des grands centres et vous n'avez qu'Ã observer le ciel en direction du sud vers 21 heures Ã une hauteur d'environ 50 - 60 degrÃ© et Ã balayer le ciel. Servez-vous de la carte plus bas (imprimez-la).

Pour localiser la constellation du Cancer, On peut commencer par trouver la constellation d'Orion qui ressemble un peu Ã un sablier dans le ciel. Sur l'image qui suit elle est situÃ©e vers la droite. Ensuite, on peut se diriger vers la constellation des GÃ©meaux juste Ã gauche d'Orion. Ses deux Ã©toiles les plus brillantes Castor et Pollux en forme la tÃªte. Maintenant, en prolongeant la ligne Castor et Pollux vers le bas vous arriverez Ã une "Ã©toile" brillante. Cette Ã©toile est en fait la planÃ¨te Saturne.

Si vous avez des jumelles ou un tÃ©lescope, profitez-en, car tout prÃ¨s de Saturne vous y verrez l'amas d'Ã©toiles M44.

Old amp refurbishing - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

After taking some voltage and signal readings all over the amp just to make shure everything was OK, I decided that it was time to plug an axe to make this amp sing :)

With some butterflies in the stomach, I plugged the amp to my speaker cabinet (2x10 Eminence Legend 1058) and fired up the amp. No hum, no hiss, no noise, well the only noise was my guitar playing but otherwise very quiet.

This amp is loud (combined to the 99dB SPL of the 1058's) But I had to try the amp full blast. Beautiful sound...

This will be a perfect bass amp for my girlfriend.

Well, time for another project... I'm thinking of a 1/2 watt tube guitar amp (http://www.sopht.ca/index.php?s=27 )

Old amp refurbishing Part 7

Tonight was a big night :)

After passing three days changing many resistors, all the caps, checking the sockets, reading tube/amp theory, etc... Tonight, I finally plugged the amp, making all the preliminary test prior to installing the tubes. (Paul Ruby startup proc.)

Once the tubes were installed, I plugged a 10 ohms, 100 Watts resistor as a dummy load, I checked the bias and power dissipation for each tube. Then I plugged the scope and fired up the amp. I injected a 200 mV p-p sine signal and crossed my fingers trying to monitoring the output.

WHAT... NO OUTPUT SIGNAL :(

BUT WAIT, the volume pot is at the minimum position. Turned the pot volume and VOILA :)

I still want to test everything a bit. I planned to change the three pots, but after checking the signal thru each of them, they seem to be OK.

Then we'll need to find an 8 ohms speaker to plug and play :))

Old amp refurbishing Part 6

Yesterday I checked the output tranny. I injected a 1V signal at the secondary leads and measured the signal at the primary. I had 22.6V, so the voltage ratio is 1:22,6. This gives me a Z ratio of (22.6 x 22.6) 1:510 Ohms.

I was happy to see that this transformer was OK... ($$$) ;)

Plus, I have received all the tubes, caps, etc. to continue this project.

But for now I have the FLUUUUU :(

Old amp refurbishing Part 5

Today the work continues :),

I changed the two prongs power cord for a three prongs power cord. Much safer I think. And in the process I installed a line filter.

After checking all the resistors, I'll have to change at least half of them. Some were way over spec. ie a 1K measured 1.5K and so on.

There are not much coupling caps in the circuit so I decided to replace them all. Plus the two 40 + 40 uF Filter caps.

Some other things to the list:

- Check the tube sockets. The pinholes seems to be too opened. So I'll find a way to close them :) So the contact will be better with the tubes pins.

- Check the OT (output transformer)

Voici quelques photos externes et internes de l'ampli. DÃ©solÃ© pour la qualitÃ© douteuse de certaines de ces photos... L'ampli n'est pas tout Ã fait terminÃ© au moment d'Ã©crire ceci. Il faut faire la finition... Et Ã§a c'est toujours long :) Le cabinet va Ãªtre peinturÃ©, et j'ai un genre de tissus "exprÃ¨s" pour la devanture. J'hÃ©site Ã mettre l'ampli dans un cabinet ou sur une planche et il faudra bien un jour Ã©crire la dÃ©signation des diffÃ©rents boutons et interrupteurs :)

En dÃ©cembre 2005, j'ai dÃ©cidÃ© de me construire un ampli pour ma nouvelle guitare. Je me suis dit que tant qu'a faire un ampli, aussi bien en faire un bon. Alors aprÃ¨s quelques recherches mon choix s'est arrÃªtÃ© sur un modÃ¨le d'ampli Ã lampe d'une puissance de 5 - 7 Watts !!!

J'ai trouvÃ© ce site: www.ax84.com . En gros, c'est l'histoire d'un gars (Chris Hurley) qui en 1998 (je crois) voulait se construire un ampli. Il a donc lancÃ© l'idÃ©e sur un BBS et a pondu un circuit d'ampli Ã lampe. De fil en aiguille, d'autres gens ont dÃ©cidÃ© de construire un ampli basÃ© sur le circuit de Chris. C'est ainsi qu'est nÃ© le modÃ¨le baptisÃ© P1. AprÃ¨s plusieurs tentatives et modification, d'autres modÃ¨les plus ou moins puissants sont nÃ©s de cette grande collaboration. (Vive le net)

Bref, je voulais un ampli pour jouer Ã la maison, et qui, si l'occasion se prÃ©sentait, ferait bonne figure (sonore) pour un jam de temps en temps...

List of things to do:

1) The power cord is a 2 prong type. I will change it for a three prong.

2) I will add a line filter

3) Change the tubes plus rebias if needed.

4) Change the power caps

5) Check all the parts (Resistors, coupling caps, pots, etc...)

6) Check the grounding "network"

Ok, I disassembled the amp a bit... Lets see the insides.

The amp is composed of 5 tubes: 1x 5U4GB, 2x 12AX7 and 2x 6V6GT. The condition of the tubes is unknown and at least one of the 12AX7 seems to be craked. So I won't take any chances and change all of them. Plus I don't have access to a tube tester for the moment.

Two weeks ago my brother gave me an old bass/guitar amp. It's a Riviera 725. This amp was manufactured in the late 60's early 70's by a company called Pepco based in Montreal, Canada.

The amp lights up but there is no sound. So I guess some work will have to be done :)
